SOREN

The seraph and the snake-man leave the same way they came, through a portal that makes my brain spasm in rejection of what it’s seeing. I reach for Cam’s arms and pull as many as I can around me, connecting to the only source of physical comfort I have.

Plus, I chose this person, so he can comfort me when my paradigm shifts and magic breaks my brain. I feel like that’s a fair trade: I believe in magic, and he comforts me.

He’s cold to the touch, but I’ve felt him when he’s warm, and I don’t know how that happens, but I could use the soothing warmth. “Can you control your temperature?”

“My magic can warm me,” he agrees, embracing me with all his available limbs.

“Do it,” I mutter. “And do a better job of telling me what to expect as your journey mate. I just agreed to an infinite mate bond and I barely understood what a fated mate was supposed to be.” I didn’t really because I didn’t believe him.

I do now, though. Those wings and eyes, that whole experience was—well, it put the fear of gods in me for sure. Atheist to believer in the blink of an eye, but the only god I have the capacity to truly care about right now is holding me like I’m the most precious thing he’s ever known, and I am just fine with that. I like knowing I’m precious to someone besides my mother.

“Is god a species or what?” I ask, because it occurs to me that I should probably figure that out.

“Species. And I can feel your fear through the bond, but I want to assure you that you do not have anything to fear from any god. They don’t have any power over you unless you give it to them or they steal it from you just like any other person. You can trust the guy with the turret to protect you or you can be the target of the turret, but all the power the guy with the turret has is simply because he has the turret. If he didn’t, he would have no power over you. It’s the same with the gods. They have a wealth of magical power, and that’s their turret. Don’t worry about them unless you have to.

“As for what to expect as my journey mate. Well, now you have the same access to my magic as I do. You just have to tap into it through the bond. You’re definitely as immortal as I am now, so congratulations on that. We have the rest of time to explore life together. You really don’t have to know everything about everything right this minute. You can take your time to learn, and while you’re figuring out magic, you can get to know me. And I get the privilege of learning about you.”

That’s a good point. I have all the time in the world to learn about his magic and my new life. I can learn about the person I’ve decided to keep for all of eternity for now.
